From Remodel to Rented: Our Octopus Suite

When you get a new property, it can often come with unexpected issues. Sometimes, due to hurricanes, previous owners, or just random bad luck you may need to gut the whole house. This article is about how we took our new property from a damaged, smelly, former apartment to a beautiful, functional, vacation rental.

Cleanup

First we cleaned everything out and took the walls down to their base:

Most of our issues were with the bathroom and the kitchen so we focused our efforts on remodeling those. We removed the bath and shower walls in order to put up new frames.

We took all the appliances and cabinets out of the kitchen and put it down to bare walls.

Rebuilding

We decided that, since we were able to remodel this unit to our liking, we changed the shower/bath combo over to a standing waterfall shower with no bathtub.

Retiling the bathroom

We bought this shower pan and this shower head, then put in this lovely pebble floor

The bathroom got all its plumbing fixtures:

Lovely new waterfall shower head
A sink and a toilet!

And we finished off the bathroom with shelving and a small chest for storing towels and linens

Meanwhile in the kitchen we bought this specially sized thin fridge and dishwasher so we could save space and build new cabinetry

We bought our Samsung oven and microwave from Lowes, but you should buy yours wherever you can get the best deal.

Decoration and Finishing Touches

While we finished the two more intense renovations we began ordering things for the bedroom, living room and dining room.

A bed and a headboard

Of course we couldn’t finish this unit without adding our own special touches. As this is The Octopus Suite we chose to include octopi in every conceivable manner.

And many more besides!

There was even a craft project or two:

Cabinet before
Cabinet After!

After several months of hard work and wonderful contractors we have a lovely finished Octopus Suite:
